Cost Effective Line Cleaning Optimization Using Artificial Intelligence

Presented By: Jay Boyd (ADS Environmental Services)

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to reduce the frequency of sewer pipe cleaning while also reducing the number of sewer overflows that your collection system experiences?

The EPA established the Capacity, Management, Operations and Maintenance (CMOM) best practices to reduce sanitary sewer overflows (SSO). This was accomplished by cleaning the total collection system annually for small systems and over multiple years for larger systems. Additionally, so-called ‘hot spots’ were cleaned at regular, high frequencies. The utilities realized that while effective, this process had the potential to be wasteful because the field maintenance team did not know the actual pipe segment conditions prior to cleaning per their schedule. Simply put, they might be cleaning already clean pipes.

In this webinar, we will discuss three utilities that adopted using remote monitoring, aided by machine learning software to enable continuous visibility of flow-depth behavior. Studies show that cleaning productivity is optimized using the new data-driven process over the two-decades-old scheduled cleaning process. Continuously monitored sites provide users with real-time visibility to remote site conditions enabling maintenance teams to clean only when needed.
